NHS Hosts Slightly Haunted Halloween Halls for Oly Elementary Students

On Sunday, the Olympia High School National Honor Society hosted its second annual Slightly Haunted Halloween Halls carnival for Oly elementary school students from 2-4 pm at the high school.  Over 450 children and parents attended the event.

The OHS students decorated the academic halls of the high school in various themes--pumpkin, princess, superhero and spooky.  Visiting children were able to trick or treat in the halls plus play games, do activities and take photos with the costumed NHS members. The mad scientists were back this year with ooey gooey items to examine!  In the commons, children were also able to plays a variety of games or visit the face painters.

The event was designed as a free community outreach program by the NHS membership.  Also canned goods and monetary donations were collected.  The donations will be taken by the NHS officers and students in the Life Skills class to the Stanford Food Pantry on Nov. 9.

NHS Spartan Bowling Volunteer Opportunity

Last year, NHS provided volunteers for the Spartan Bowlers.  Below are the bowling dates for this semester.

Anyone interested in gaining volunteer hours welcome to be a peer buddy for the Spartan Bowlers.  We encourage the volunteers to bowl with the kids, rather than just watch/help as they serve as excellent models – plus it makes it more fun!  If money is a concern, we can work something out.

Just like last year, we meet in the OMS gym after school, board a bus, bowl, and then return in time for the shuttle.  If volunteers want to meet us at the bowling alley, that is totally fine.

September 7 and September 21
October 5 and October 19
November 2 November 16 and November 30
December 7

The cost is still $6.00, and we meet in the OMS gym before loading the bus.

See Ms Shaw in the high school or Mrs. Davis in the middle school for additional information.

OHS To Host College Night on March 28

By Jeris Eilts, OHS Torch Reporter

The OHS Counseling Office is hosting a college night on March 28 from 6:00-7:30 pm in the high school auditorium.  There are going to be four different colleges at the event.

Mrs. Steve said, “This is going to give the students a chance to look at what the difference is between a big university and a small one, and a small community college compared to a four-year university.”

The colleges that will be here are Eureka College, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and Heartland Community College. This will offer students a variety of college options.  Parents welcome to attend!

Seniors, if you have not talked to your college about deadlines, you need to do that! Most deadlines are May 1.  “If you haven’t thought about college or don’t know where you’re going to go, then you should make an appointment with one of us and get that figured out,” said Mrs. Steve, OHS guidance counselor.

Seniors, make sure you look at the board outside of the counseling office for scholarship opportunities.  Anyone who has questions on this can contact Mrs. Steve or Mr. Castillo in the counseling office.
